| 03-March-2020 Australia 150th Anniviversary Sydney-San Francisco Mail Steamer Service Wesley First Day Cover (large) with cachet The only recorded Fiji Times Express - United States combination franking, sent by S. S. Wonga Wonga in 1871 and affixed with Sheetlet of 10 x $1.10 stamps S. S. Wonga Wonga affixed with pictorial postmark Rope Circle, Sydney, N.S.W.. On 26 March 1870, the SS Wonga Wonga departed Sydney for Honolulu via Auckland. It was the first steamer to depart from the Australian end of the new Sydney–San Francisco route. The following month, the SS City of Melbourne joined the Wonga Wonga on the Pacific route, the two steamers having been chartered by HH Hall from the Australasian Steam Navigation Co. For the first year of Pacific service, these two steamers voyaged as far as Honolulu, where passengers, mail and other cargo would be transferred to the US-flagged steamers Idaho and Ajax, bound for San Francisco. The same arrangement occurred for the return journey to Sydney. This stamp issue marks the 150th anniversary of the service, made possible once the American transcontinental railway had been completed, connecting the US east and west coasts.
