| 14-January-2020 Norfolk Island Australia Early Botanic Art Wesley First Day Cover with Floral Art cachet and Pouteria costata of two stamps $1.10 Lagunaria patersonia and $2.20 Ungeria floribunda tied pictorial cancel Plant, Norfolk Island, NSW 2899. One of the earliest examples of botanical art from geographically remote Norfolk Island, home to a wealth of native flora, is attributed to convict John Doody, who arrived in the colony of New South Wales in 1791 on board the Admiral Barrington. The vessel was captained by William Paterson, who was dispatched to Norfolk Island, taking Doody with him as a servant. It is believed Doody is responsible for a collection of watercolour, ink and pencil works held in the State Library of NSW, which visually record around 50 flora species. One stamp shows Ungeria floribunda, which belongs to Norfolk Island’s only endemic flora genus. The other design shows Lagunaria patersonia, which is commonly known as the Norfolk Island Hibiscus or the white oak.
