The primary aim of theHMAS Wyatt Earp expedition, which departed Melbourne in 1948, was to explore sites for a permanent research base in King George V Land, in the Australian Antarctic Territory, and to conduct scientific work. Extreme weather and the ship’s physical and technical limitations prevented it from reaching the Antarctic continent, but the expedition was not deemed a failure. The RAAF Vought-Sikorsky OS2U Kingfisher floatplane transported on the ship’s deck undertook aerial surveying, and scientific observations and recordings were made during the voyage, securing the future of Australia’s.
